Yawn Too Much

We yawn mostly when we’re tired and bored. Yawning is useful for alleviating pressure in your eardrums, but we yawn usually because we feel drowsy. Yawning excessively can be felt when the act of yawning occurs repeatedly or in close succession that is more than few times per minute. Yawning is a normal response by the body to drowsiness or fatigue but sometimes it may also be triggered by observing someone else yawning. Excessive yawning, on the other hand, could be a symptom of a serious health issue. Some medications, such as those used to treat depression, pain, anxiety or allergies, can cause excessive yawning too. Now here are some of the reasons to know why we yawn too much.

1. Insomnia

Lack of sleep is the most common reason why you yawn while you are awake. That is your brain’s signal that indicates you are tired and need to rest. However, your lifestyle could be one of the reasons for lack of sleep and other sleeping disorders.

2. Fatigue or drowsiness

When you are super tired or sleepy, it is totally common to yawn. While the exact reason and mechanism of why we yawn while feeling fatigued is still unknown, yawning when you are tired is a common phenomenon seen in all humans.

3. Vasovagal reactions

This phenomenon is associated with a problem with the functioning of the vagus nerve. This occurs due to internal bleeding in and around your heart or aorta that is the main artery that feeds blood to the heart. It could also indicate for a heart attack or a severed aorta. And the most uncommon symptom people yawn too much without fatigue or lack of sleep that indicate heart trouble.

4. Specific medications

There are certain medications that can also make you feel  sleepy and drowsy, leading to excessive yawning. Medicines like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antihistamines (drugs used to treat allergies), other antidepressants, and some pain medication cause too much yawning which is too common and seen in most people.

5. Epilepsy

A phenomenon that occurs due to certain permanent damage to the brain that then irritates and exasperates the area making a person to suffer from epileptic seizures.  This irritation causes the brain to send out abnormal signals which can cause excessive yawning. Rare cause for excessive yawning may be associated with a number of brain related ailments and may be seen in patients with this existing condition and may occur after a seizure.

6. Liver failure

A bland symptom of end stage liver failure is too much of yawning. While the exact mechanism and reason of why this happens is not known. However, researchers say that it’s the fatigue in the patient that makes him/her yawn too much.

7. Brain tumour or stroke

In this condition the brain tends to send out abnormal signals, causing excessive yawning. Scientists found excessive yawning to be a symptom in patients suffering from lesions in their brain stem. It is due to the presence of the lesions in the brain that causes irritation of the nerves in the brain.

8. Multiple sclerosis

According to a study, patients suffering from MS or multiple sclerosis often felt long bouts of yawning and sleep problems. The study also asserted that people suffering from multiple sclerosis suffer from thermoregulatory dysfunction that is inability to control the temperature of their body which leads them to yawn too much.
