Tips to Avoid Blowing Speakers

Speakers don’t come cheap, and as such, it is best to avoid blowing them by not caring for them properly.

However, not blowing speakers is one of the biggest challenges that most DJs face. That’s because, when a speaker is put to use at all times, the risk of it blowing is elevated.

To help you retain your speakers for longer periods of time, here are 5 tips to avoid blowing your DJ speakers over time.

1. Turn the volume down

Extremely high volume is one of the main causes of speaker blowouts. If you need extreme volume for your mixes to come out right, then you need to find a speaker that is large enough to accommodate it, without having to push the speaker to its maximum volume capacity. 2. Avoid clipping your amplifier

This is the biggest threat when it comes to speaker blowouts.  Clipping entails pushing the amplifier beyond its limits. The goal is usually to get more power from the speaker. However, the result is that the amplifier usually outputs excess power, and this may blow out your speakers. To avoid this, just get a speaker that is large enough, and eliminate the need to clip your amplifier.

3. Make use of a fast-blow fuse

If you put your speakers to use for long periods, then you need to take extra precaution and make use of a fast-blow fuse. This fuse protects your speaker in case of excess power output by the amplifier. A fast-blow fuse can help you maintain your speaker for longer. It is an extra expense, but it is worth it, and can save you thousands of dollars in buying new speakers. In case you don’t know how to incorporate this fuse into your speaker power system, ask any electrician in your locality to help you out. It is a fairly quick process.

4. Get good quality speakers

This is probably one of the best tips for avoiding a speaker blowout. The better the quality of the speaker, the more insulated it is from a blowout.  For instance, one of the main reasons for speaker blowouts is overheating during a performance. To avoid this problem, go for a top quality speaker, one whose amplifier runs cool even when performing outdoors. Such a speaker may set you back some more money, but it will serve you for longer.

5. Keep speakers in a cool place when performing

In case you don’t have the money to buy a speaker that can cool itself, make sure your speaker is in a cool place at all times when performing outdoors.  To do this successfully, you must always make sure that you get to the performance set early enough. This gives you ample time to set up your equipment. By doing this, you get a good idea of which locations are best for your speakers, away from direct sunlight. This can go a long way in preventing speaker blowouts, and gain more from your speakers.
