Disadvantages of Maida

Maida or all purpose flour is the refined wheat flour that doesn’t contain any nutrients normally present in wheat. It has 100% carbohydrates and no fiber, which makes it bad for consumption for a diabetic patient as it raises sugar levels in blood.

Maida Disadvantages

As it contains no fiber to clear the blood vessels of fat deposits, it leads to cardiac problems. Excess consumption of the maida products may result in early puberty, obesity, diabetes, and increase the risk of causing heart attacks.

It contains processed carbohydrates which release energy suddenly and leads to obesity if consumed daily whereas normal cereals like wheat and rice have natural carbohydrates which undergo gradual digestion and release energy gradually. Studies shown that alloxan (which is added to maida to make it smooth and silky), the diabetes causing chemical present in maida destroys the beta cells of the pancreas. Also, benzoyl peroxide combined with protein in wheat flour promotes diabetes.

The products from maida are not healthy for children, adolescents, adults and seniors. It is difficult to avoid maida as we find maida products everywhere. So, increase the intake of vegetables while eating maida products like parottas, rotis and puris. Whole grain atta breads consists of large amounts of maida with little fiber or atta. So these are not healthy for everyone. Also, prefer rotis (along with vegetables) to noodles because noodles is the processed food with many disadvantages including chemicals and trans fat. People suffering from indigestion, acidity and constipation should avoid intake of maida.
