How Online Dating Become the Preferred Way to Meet Singles

This post was last updated on January 19th, 2024

We’ve all been there. Hovering over a dating app on our screen, debating whether to delete it or not. Or in fact, deleting it altogether only to re-download it a little while later. Familiar? You certainly aren’t alone.

We started out with such hope, uploading laughing profile photos and images that depict our loves and likes. But down the line, we grew somewhat jaded with the dead end chats and first date flops. We wanted long term love, not a part time job!

The modern Western dating world is sometimes described as a minefield by singles in a search  for long term love. With the swathes of unwanted ‘one nighter’ or ‘benefits’ options presenting themselves, it can be tricky to root out the true connections we seek. We want depth of connection beyond the thrill of a screen match.

But are dating apps and free online match websites deserving of the negative rumours? Do dating apps in our USA cities still hold keys to some very happy futures?

You may not be able to detect physical chemistry from a telephone line or computer screen. But you can connect with flirtation. You can also construct your own ideas of whether you’re a match based on what you see or read about the other person. It’s a strong start point, which is the purpose of any online dating tool.

It certainly can be a great way to put the feelers out for new daters. It can also be a great way to meet someone new for those who aren’t so confident in approaching someone they’re attracted to.

We may well be behind a screen – but is that so different to hiding amongst the flatteringly dim lights of a bar, or within the protection of a circle of friends in a club?

Its easy to blame modern culture for the desolation of romance. We commonly lament over the golden era of ‘old fashioned’ love. The kind of love and dating of classic Sunday movies, or that our grandparents might have experienced.

We love these stories, and hanker after the romance of them. But in turn, this was a generation of daters who didn’t live together until they were married, and who sent endless letters long distance in some circumstances before choosing to marry one another.

Could it be argued that in fact a generation of city daters are widening their perspectives, rather than settling for the first man we met in our neighbourhood? Are letter exchanges so very different to our modern message exchanges with potential suitors?

As modern women, we empower ourselves in seeking and securing the things we want in life now. We choose careers for ourselves, vary our friendship circles, and have the luxury of more than one option for our morning coffee. We enjoy a life of choice, often aided by modern developments in our culture. This includes technology, extending to our dating lives.

Can we really have it both ways?

We live busy lives, and we don’t always have the time to dedicate to our relationship lives. We might like to, but with hectic schedules and increasing social and professional pressures building in our lives it’s not always easy. But just because we are busy, doesn’t mean we want to give up on quality experiences.

The rise of online dating has catapulted modern dating into the next century. Technological advances are one of the reasons for this. The easy to use format with apps like Tinder and Bumble have made dating apps a very attractive option. Added to which, many do not charge the costly membership prices that dating websites used to. Anyone can use a dating app now, which has made it far more inclusive overall.

Social media has also massively contributed to our change of culture in terms of dating. We have become accustomed to sharing our personal photos and stories online on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. This makes the idea of doing a similar thing on a dating app less of a daunting prospect ultimately. Dating apps have become as standard use as any other app on our smartphones – and for very good reason!

No matter who you are or who you want to date, free dating is a fantastic option. It can help you to connect with people who have similar interests and views simply from opening up the right app for you, and applying a few search filters. Before you know it, you could be sitting down to dinner with someone you never usually would have met organically, but that you have so much you share in common!

What better way to meet a long term partner, than in a situation where you’re sharing in an activity you know you both enjoy, giving you a conversation starter from the get go. Free online dating apps and websites have revolutionised how we approach dating – and apps and match websites are a big part of that shift!

So, single daters, perhaps next time you think of deleting that app in frustration, open up an app that will help you cross paths with someone who shares a love of what you love instead. It could be the best choice you make for yourself this year.
