Cyber stalking is a crime in which the so called stalker or the attacker harasses a victim by using electronic communication, such as e-mail or instant messaging (IM), or messages and posts updated in social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc or a forum group or a fan page.

A cyber stalker depends upon the obscurity afforded by the Internet to grant them to stalk their victim or target without being disclosed and discovered. Cyber stalking messages are quite different from ordinary spam messages as the cyber stalker targets a particular victim with often threatening messages or harassing messages which bothers the victim mentally creating distress and fear.

Cyber stalking impact

Personally, I too get so many creepy messages from the persons I never met and never knew, not even mutually. I keep ignoring this kind of messages in my “other” message folder which I guess are piled up there. I never delete those messages, not because I ignore them, but to keep some evident and proof for future need. The creepy messages from the cyber stalkers are normally of two types, one is which is sexually harassing and second is disturbing and bothering the victim creating fear for fun. The first kind of messages are like “You look sexy dear..”, “What’s ur cup size?”, “Wanna hav sex chat?”, “What’s ur figure?” and even they send some real dirty images of their own body parts and porn snaps which are quite disturbing and annoying. The second type of messages includes “Hey hws u, remember me?”, “I am not gonna spare u..”, “I saw u today, u look beautiful..” and you will be wondering why the guy is stalking you with no reason. Social networking is spreading too far giving easy access to everyone to find anyone. These can affect your personal data like photographs, phone numbers, email id, addresses that could be real harmful for you. There are some ways to deal with these stupid cyber stalkers. And here are they..

  • Change your privacy settings: Changing your privacy setting so that your personal information will be secured within your friends only. Changing the privacy setting that have the options who can contact you on Facebook make it always “friends of friends” rather “everyone”, and on Twitter protect your posts and tweets from public viewing, as blocking one person on Twitter doesn’t works if your tweets are viewed by public.
  • Never reply to any stranger or cyber stalker: Yes, responding to their messages could make them feel like you are interested. So, try not to respond them, no matter how irritating and annoying they are.
  • Don’t check your ‘other folder”: Of course for Facebook as there’s few ways to reduce cyber crime on Twitter. Other folder which gets piled up of all annoying and weird messages could give you all stress.
  • Friend requests that are not known, avoid it: Friend requests or requests to follow your fan page is quite different. If you get friend request from a person who is completely stranger for you, better delete it. And if you find any stalking and harassing comments on your fan page then ban that member permanently.
  • Check the person’s profile: There are many people who create fake profiles and even start harassing victims soon after creating the profile. So, always go through their profile, to find out the profile created date, what kind of stuffs dwell there and block it.
  • Block the cyber stalker, if stalking pursue:  Better block the user if you find it more disturbing and annoying whether it is Facebook or Twitter which is the ultimate weapon to stop them.
  • Try out some creative way out on social media: If you really wanna fight and teach a lesson to all these kind of stalkers then, create a group page. Open group page of course and start posting all of the copied conversations keeping it on public view. Let it spread, be it any kind of text or images spread the awareness and inspire other people to do the same. These could be a real kick ass weapon for stopping them.
  • Never delete any message or picture: Deleting messages or any picture could make you relax but could not help you really. So, if anything worst happens, then you could have the evident and proof of it and also you can copy it for updating in your open group page against the cyber stalkers.
