Importance of Child Health Care in Schools

Health Care in Schools

As a parent, I always worry about my child health and safety. Like many parents, the first days after my child joined elementary school were full of worry and counting down the hours until when I would have my child again. I couldn’t stop worrying about whether my child got hurt while playing, got some infection from another kid, or eaten dirt while the teacher wasn’t watching. I was also concerned if the teachers and school nurses would give my child the correct medicine or fast aid when needed.

Eventually, my baby grew up and became a good soccer player. One day, my child was severely injured in school while playing soccer with his friends. He got severely wounded on his left knee, which ended his chance of playing professional soccer. According to the doctor’s reports, the first respondent to the incident, the nurse, wasn’t well-trained to handle the case. This led to her miscalculating the intensity of the injury, which caused more damage to my child’s leg. Doctors explained to me that the school nurse hadn’t received proper training, leading to an unfortunate outcome.

Many people underestimate the value of having trained health professionals in school facilities until the worst happens. Some school administrations don’t want to pay a lot of money in hiring a competent school nurse. What they fail to understand is they might spend more money when disaster strikes. Many cases in the courts’ systems relating to schools can be avoided if people take their responsibilities seriously and perform their due diligence.

Child health care is crucial to any institution. School health care can be described as a healthful environment, with nursing and other health services that a child needs to stay healthy in school. School health also includes nutritious and appealing school meals, counseling, social and psychological services, and many more services. Children are very delicate beings that require a lot of monitoring and care. If you fail to provide the needed services, many children grow to live lives they ought not to be living.

It’s not enough hiring a school nurse. School authority should make sure the person or people are well-trained. In addition, the nurse should continually receive training to keep up with new medical practices. Schools can seek services from companies like Harmony Healthcare to have their school nurse up-to-date with current medical practices.

It’s essential to also have adequate equipment for the child health care in the school. The equipment should also be updated as often as possible. With technology constantly changing, schools should take up the responsibility to ensure their school nurses, counselors, and other caregivers get the best equipment for their tasks.

School nurses should also learn how best to handle children that get injuries or illnesses that require immobilization or limited physical activities. They can create exercises that help the sick child get the exercise they need.

Lastly, it’s important to teach children some first aid practices that can prove useful especially when there’s no one around to help.
