Ryanair Compensation for Delays and Flight Disruptions

Delays and Flight Disruptions Flight disruptions are so often a common situation when we consider airline travelling.

As an air passenger, if you find yourself in the unpleasant event of a flight delay, know there are ways to follow if you want to cover your losses if you purchased one or more flying tickets with Ryanair. But what if you planned to have a long-distance flight scheduled with one or more connecting flights and due to the airline flight delays you risk ruining your entire travel?

Leader of the commercial airline in Europe, Ryanair offers services and compensation to minimize losses under European Union Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.

So if you booked a flight with Ryanair and the airline made last-minute changes on your fight, you might be interested to know your eligibility for Ryanair flight delay compensation, what you should do to claim this compensation and what are your rights in case of flight disruptions or cancellations.

In the event of a flight delay for more than 2 hours, know that you have two available options:

  • Make a refund request
  • Change the delayed flight free of charge

How do I make a refund request to Ryanair?

You should know that if your flight arrived with a delay longer than 3 hours, you have rights as an air passenger, under EU Regulation 261. You can be entitled to Ryanair flight delay compensation and claim the reimbursement of your flying ticket cost for a booked flight that has not been operated by the airline.

To request the full refund you must complete the Ryanair refund application form and wait to be processed within 7 working days, using the same form of payment as for the initial booking.

How can I rebook or change the delayed flight?

Know you have the right to be informed by the airline about any changes of your flight and Ryanair must provide flight details to their air passengers, through text message 30 minutes before the originally set departure time, if the flight is delayed by more than 90 minutes.

For delays longer than 2 hours the airline must send you an email to the address you provided at the time of booking, specifying the available options for this situation.

You can also check flight status online by visiting the Updated Flight Information page or on the airport screens.

In any of the situations of a cancelled flight, when the airline modifies your departure time at the last minute or your arrival time is delayed for more than 3 hours, you can either transfer to the next available flight for the final destination or you can choose for free another Ryanair flight depending on the seat availability whether at the same airport of origin or destination served by Ryanair or at a different one.

To change your flight or to book again you can contact Ryanair, by calling customer relations or you can go to the ticket office at the airport.

What services am I entitled to in case of Route change/Overnight delay?

If you want to change the route on the next available flight to your final destination and the flight will take off the next day or if your flight was delayed overnight, know that the airline must cover  the costs for the following services:

Q 2 phone calls (fax or email messages)

Q hotel accommodation (for one or more nights)

Q transportation between the airport and the hotel

Q transfer to a subsequent flight to arrive at a destination chosen by you or a ticket for a flight to your final destination at a later date that suits you for any change of route to a later date

Q meals and drinks in a reasonable amount for the waiting period.

What compensation for flight delays or any other flight disruptions (cancelled or overbooked flight) am I entitled to get from Ryanair?

For any delayed or cancelled flights, Ryanair must pay compensation depending on the distance of your flight and the length of the delay. Know you are eligible to claim up to $600 and the airline company is processing your request for compensation within 7 to 10 days.

Financial compensation offered by the company
                               Distance
250 EUR <1500 km
400 EUR
Between 1500 and 3500 km
600 EUR
More than 3500 km

Remember that the care rights mentioned above do not apply if you choose a change of route for a later date or if you choose to receive a refund.

Also please note that you are not eligible for compensation or refund if:

Q Ryanair flight delay or cancellation was due to extraordinary circumstances which the airline could not avoid (air traffic control, bad weather, strikes in the aviation industry, terrorist alerts or security reasons, airport or runway closure, social unrest, natural disasters, flight security reasons)

Q if you have been notified at least 7 days and up to 14 days in advance the flight is cancelled and you are offered an alternative flight

Q if your flight is delayed and you have reached your final destination with a delay of 3 hours or less.

If you have any complaints about the implementation of your rights under the EU Regulation 261, you can contact your national law enforcement institution at the place of departure.
