Digital depression is very much real. We have become so used to smartphones that we don’t realize how much we have become addicted to them. Smartphones have become our daily planners, socializing hub, studying and entertainment centers.

What we don’t realize is that this can cause us a lot of troubles. Our younger generation, especially, is at higher risk. According to a research, 1 out of 4 teens stays online almost constantly. That makes up 24% of the teen community. Whereas, 56% teens go online several times a day. That is a large part of our young population and it calls for a parental controls.

High Risk of Depression

Anxiety and depression are highly related to excessive device use. Constantly using smartphones result in the following:

  • Lack of physical activity
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Fear of missing out
  • Social isolation
  • Obesity

Physical activity is necessary for the release of dopamine, which is responsible for keeping a person happy and fit. Sitting in front of the screens keeps the teenagers from going out. They play games online instead of outdoor. Lack of sleep causes them to stay tired all the time. They don’t have enough energy to do their school work or even daily tasks. Excessive screen time also creates the need to constantly check phones. Staying away from them becomes impossible and as a result, they prefer to spend time with their screens instead of people. All this doesn’t have any obvious issues, but constantly staying tired, lack of actual human interaction and no physical activity become a reason for depression. When high hopes from social networking aren’t fulfilled it becomes another cause for teens to feel down.

Parents can remotely lock their children’s devices and restrict the use. Use the predefined rules or set up your own. The app will lock the phone on the designated time and open it accordingly. You can use this feature on android as well as iOS.

How to use this feature:

Set the time for the available rules, i.e. bedtime, homework time and dinner time or define your own. Give the starting and ending time, add recurrent days and add as many rules as you like. The child will get a notification that they can’t use their phones forcing them to do other healthy activities.

Screens should be fun, not depressive!

Technology is a necessity of the time and it should be only that. Don’t let your kids use it to the point that they have to suffer from anxiety and depression. It is often difficult to detect and you might realize when it’s too late. Try to enroll them in an outdoor game or gym, spend quality time together and don’t allow cellphone in bedrooms. A very handy way to enforce these rules is using Android parental controls that will block the use altogether. Keep your kids safe from the evils of the modern world.
