Why Some Students Avoid Writing

It is a common practice for students not to like the education system more so avoid the process of writing. Too many students writing seems like such a long process. To some, they see it as an uphill task because it involves many things and sub-components. When it comes to some educators, they wonder if they no longer find joy in the slower refined process of written communication. It probably might be caused by the fact that there are so used to the television’s fast-paced life. 

When students submit their work, it is usually difficult to read and sometimes very brief. It may be a result of a misunderstanding which can compound to more problems at a secondary level. Some students just going around with the thought like “I need to find someone to write my thesis paper”, and some of them succeed in that, because some services provide good papers.

When you look at students, there may be many reasons why they may feel a bit overwhelmed and avoid writing:

  • They feel you have too much task at hand and they do not start it
  • To form letters, they have to concentrate, and this is not an automatic process for most of them
  • They struggle with the mechanics of writing and how to use them.
  • They have a challenge developing their ideas fluently 
  • They are inefficient and slow when it comes to retrieving the words to express themselves in an idea. 
  • They think that the writing process is tedious and slow
  • They have disabilities like dyslexia that interferes with them 

These are some of the reasons that many students have a hard time when it comes to writing. But as teachers and parents, there are ways that we can help students to deal with this. We can bring back that spark of enjoyment that they can find in writing. To help them, students need to be able to develop a few things: 

  • They need to develop better and more efficient skills when it comes to writing
  • They need to understand and appreciate the purpose of writing. 

When students develop the skills and understand them, it becomes easy for them to apply them in different situations.

Skill development

When you are developing writing skills, there are some necessary steps that you need to follow to achieve that. These steps follow a hierarchy. The different levels include underlying processing skills, mechanical skills, content skills, and writing efficiency. 

Looking at the underlying processing skills, developing them varies with different areas; motor, memory, and the area of language. A few examples of this include the speed of the motor’s performance, the physical writing components, active working memory, and language ideation and formulation. 

The mechanical skills usually involve other tasks at a lower level. These include the use of space, letter form, capitalization, basic spelling, and punctuation. As the mechanics mature, they involve clarity of expression, speed, and appropriate grammar. 

Some guidelines that one can use to help students that are avoiding writing

When it comes to avoiding writing, there are many reasons a student can avoid writing. The most common is usually that the process of writing is not fun and enjoyable. When this happens, writing ceases to be meaningful, and it becomes challenging to get the enthusiasm of writing. The thing we need to understand is that students learn writing by writing. Students need to learn writing skills that give writing more meaning.
