Lip Balm Facts

The one essential thing that can be found in every woman’s handbag is their favourite brand of moisturising lip balm. Available in different shades and flavours, lip balms have assumed to be an indispensable part of our makeup routine. Whether your lips are feeling dry or chapped or you just want your lips to shine or get colour tint, you blindly resort to lip balms.

But there are some lesser known facts about lip balms that you must know to understand how their use is affecting you in several ways:

1. It Does Nothing To Provide Moisture to Your Lips

It might seem a new fact for you but it is certainly true that lip balms have nothing to do with providing your lips with extra moisturisation. So what do they do to get rid of the dryness? Instead of providing moisture, lip balms actually work on the basic principle of locking the moisture and preventing dryness. The lip balm creates a seal on the lips, thus ensuring that the moisture is locked and keeps your lips soft, specifically in the winter season.

2. Their Usage Cannot Be Limited To Lips Only

Lip balms are not just meant for keeping the lips moisturised. Your lips are not the only part that needs to be moisturised, you can also use lip balms for the moisturising the area around the nose, cuticles of hands and feet and even treating chapped areas of knees, elbows and heels.

3. You Cannot Get Addicted To Its Usage

Most of us feel that stepping outside the house without lip balm in the makeup kit is a sin. But this does not mean that you can get addicted to its usage. This fact about lip balms is often misconstrued as no ingredient in the lip balm can lead to its addiction. However, studies have found that ingredients of lip balms can cause allergies to some people but not addiction. You can anytime decide to ditch your lip balm to any homemade lip balm or clarified butter (ghee) to treating dry lips.

4. Lip Balms Carry An Expiry Date

Like every other makeup product, even lip balms come with expiry date, which most people ignore. Just like any expired product, using expired lip balms is totally unsafe and might cause damage to the skin without even your realising it. Better keep a check on the expiry dates of your makeup products and discard them immediately after expiry.

5. Little Bit Intake Can Cause Minor Stomach Upset

Most women have the habit of licking their lips despite knowing that they have lip balm or lipstick on. While most of us don’t find it odd or something that must be avoided, medical studies have found that little bit consumption of lip balms can sometimes be the possible reason for upset stomach. Unintentional licking is still okay but if you are someone who is obsessed with their flavour or texture and feel like consuming it, you may immediately need medical attention.
