5 of the Best (and Surprisingly Affordable) Cars to Consider

Best Affordable Cars to Upgrade

It can be down to necessity or simply out of pure desire –but you don’t always need to justify your reasons for upgrading your car. Maintenance costs, carbon emissions, personal circumstances or a need for change can make us go in search of a new set of wheels. But it doesn’t mean you can toss your budget out the window and go for the biggest, boldest option. Or can you?

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has found that nearly 8 million pre-loved cars found new owners in 2018. And with a growing number of motorists on UK roads, it means more vehicles are making their way onto forecourts and into showrooms nationwide. More choice means better deals – and that means you’ll be surprised at how far your budget could go.

Here are five of the best (and surprisingly affordable) models you could upgrade to:

1. Nissan Qashqai

For families needing a bigger set of wheels, the Nissan Qashqai has arguably redefined the market. As a crossover model, it combines the toughness of an SUV with the space of a small MPV – and it also finds the time to offer the handling of a super mini. Depending on which model you decide on, features could include parking assist, dual zone air con and an in-car infotainment system.

2. Ford Focus ST

You’ll often find Ford up towards the top of any list of the UK’s best-selling cars. The Fiesta is a big success for the American manufacturer, but the Focus ST takes it to the next level if you’re looking for your next car. The ST stands apart from the standard Focus thanks to its sports body kit, lower suspension and alloy wheels– perfect if you want an affordable set of wheels that packs a punch.

3. Vauxhall Astra VXR

The Astra is a name that’s been around for a long time, so you might well think it’s a bit of a ‘meh’ option. But the VXR is the model that’ll have you dashing down to your local Vauxhall dealer in the hope of finding a great used deal. Key USPs include its 2-litre, 16v Turbo engine, keyless entry and traction control, while adaptive forward lighting moves the headlights based on the steering.

It even set the lap record for a hot hatch at Germany’s infamous Nürburgring circuit in 2005.

4. BMW 3 Series

If it’s luxury you’re after with your next car, it doesn’t have to come at a massive cost. The BMW 3 Series is a refined drive, with innovative features and comfortable interiors. It also looks the part –no matter the body type. Bluetooth, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and 17in alloy wheels tend to be among the standard features–depending on the trim option your budget allows for.

5. Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 will push towards the higher end of any budget. But with good reason. The double What Car? Used Car Award-winning SUV gives buyers a lot for the money you’ll be spending. It’s a practical family car from the outset, but it’s packed full of features such as automatic LED lighting, leather seats, parking sensors, a powered boot door and much more.

Volvo is also a market-leader when it comes to safety, which might be something to bear in mind.
