Legacy of Entrepreneurship – The Sardas

Neetish Sarda

Introduction

Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda, a Calcutta entrepreneur, was born in 1959. After graduating from St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata, Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda joined his father’s venture. He concentrated all his attention on the jute business, which had historically been India’s most profitable export. However, when he joined the business, the state of the jute industry in West Bengal was dismal. Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda strived to revive the dying jute industry in Kolkata.

There was a time when investors, employees, and anybody involved in the jute sector were losing money. Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda gathered all of his might to save the dying jute mills; and there has been no turning back since.

The Sarda Group of Industries is headquartered in Kolkata and operates throughout West Bengal. The company currently operates several jute mills that manufacture great quantities of jute products, making the Sarda Group of Industries one of the biggest jute manufacturers. Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda has made significant contributions to the state through sports, events, public affairs, and business.

Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda has also been involved in the formation of the Ram Dev Sarda Maha Vidyalaya, Purnea region of Bihar, as part of his desire to serve others. The Chandrakala Devi Charitable Trust of Sarda developed this management college.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

Mr. Neetish Sarda comes from a long line of entrepreneurs who have excelled in their entrepreneurial ventures. He was exposed to a new work culture while studying abroad; a culture more dynamic and flexible than the one that he had seen in India. This prompted him to start his own business and turn the endless, boring rows of desks and cubical culture into a more colourful and enticing working environment.

In 2016, Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda son, Mr. Neetish Sarda, founded Smartworks, a managed workspaces provider. Smartworks was founded on the belief that infrastructure is one of the innovative business components that can help people reach their full potential by allowing them to work better and smarter in a shared environment.

Smartworks introduced flexibility to the workplace, as well as a high level of employee enthusiasm and concepts, like game arenas and rest zones. He believes that employees should be given more than just an office; they should be given office experience.

Smartworks has grown at an exponential rate since its inception. It clocked over 100 crores revenue in just two years after starting its operation. It soon crossed the 300 crores figure to become the largest flexible workspace provider in the country.

Conclusion

Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda, during his talk on survival instinct at the IIEST College Association’s convention, says, “knowledge isn’t power; knowledge is merely potential power. When you take significant action on it, it changes into true power. Realising what to do ahead is important, but knowing how to accomplish it is much more important.” Mr. Ghanshyam Sarda’s son Mr. Neetish Sarda has taken his father’s successful entrepreneurial legacy forward by offering a seamless and unrivalled office experience, chosen by over 420 organisations, many of which are Fortune 500 companies
