What to Consider When Shopping for a Realistic Dildo

Listen, we get it. Looking down mid-fun-time (accidentally or not) and seeing a glowing green thing or fluorescent rainbow rod sticking out can be a total buzzkill. Especially if you just built up an elaborate fantasy about an actual penis. While we do not shame folks for their sexual aesthetic, we understand that for a lot of users, a realistic look and feel is a must.

Now, ad hoc searching online for top rated dildos is an easy task, sure. There is always at least one realistic toy on those lists. You can even see how the top spots have changed over the last few seasons. But before you commit to any purchase, no matter how much praise a dildo gets, you should stop and think about these factors.

Consider the size of it

Believe it or not, folks, bigger is not better all the time. In fact, it might be worse. Go too big and you can end up tearing yourself up – and then good luck explaining that at the emergency room! So get smart.

Think about your best sexual experience (flying solo or with someone – or several someone’s – anything goes). What made it so great? Was your g-spot or p-spot getting some dedicated attention? Or was it just good ol’ fullness of having a thick piece of pleasure in your (front or back) door? This will give you an idea of whether you are looking for length or girth.

Get a ruler, or better yet, a flexible tailor’s measuring tape (cheap at any sewing supplies store). Get ahold of a carrot, cucumber, or something, and see how linear inches become circumference. If you are aiming at good girth, the most realistic feeling you can get will come in at around 1.5 inches (for beginners and intermediately experienced users). If you are already a penis size connoisseur and prefer a strong stretching, consider going up to 2 or 2.5 inches at most.

Always use what you already had inside you as a baseline and a comfort point. Remember, using dildos is not supposed to hurt you (no pain kink shaming, but avoid injuring yourself in those hypersensitive areas). If you would rather aim for a special spot, or if this is your first dildo, pick a narrower model at 1.25 inches max diameter.

Consider the available materials

There are a ton of them and not all of them are good. And some of them lie. Yes, for real. When you go looking for a realistic toy, there are some materials that you will definitely see on offer at every store. These include but are not limited to: jelly, silicone, rubber, PVC, and “cyberskin”.

When we say some of them lie, we mean that they are often painted to resemble other materials. They will have weird smells and be made poorly. Moreover, they frequently contain phthalates, which can cause nasty reactions. You can learn more about that at this link. Add to that their porousness, which prevents proper sanitation, and that is an embarrassing trip to the doctor right there.

Silicone dildos are your best bet by far. You may be facing a bit of an investment, especially if you insist on brand, but it is worth every cent. They are non-porous, so cleaning and disinfection is a breeze: no bacteria, no mold, no residue mildew. They last for ages and are easy to care for. Because silicone comes in varying degrees of density, you can choose between soft, squishy, and firm feeling.

If 100% pure silicone is not an option right now, your next best choice is glass. Have no fear, this is different than kitchenware etc., it will never break from use, even if you go rough. Just pick a quality one. We know no living penis feels like glass, but these toys have the big advantage of easily matching your body temperature, so that you forget the thing is artificial.

Consider the general shape and specific features

For shape, again, think of your favorite experience and use that as a reference. Ram-rod straight? Slightly curved? Blunt or pointy? Proportionate or not, relative to its balls? The anatomy of your toy will directly determine the effect you get, even more than the material.

Texture is also an essential factor in dildo shaping. Will it have veins, maybe? Especially for glass dildos, odd bumps and angles may not look life-like, but can give a much more realistic feeling when actually using them.

Also, consider sacrificing some model fidelity for the sake of practical features. Choose a tiny one for discretion, especially if you want to carry it with you somewhere (or everywhere). Consider suction cup bases for handsfree play. In the end, realistic pleasure wins over realistic looks any day.
