Items Putting in a Storage Unit

Each home has its fair share of clutter. The items making up the clutter come in different sizes and types. They can be found in nearly every area of the house as well: in the bedrooms, garage, and closets.

If you have too many used and unused belongings at home, these items can spill out of the places where you store them. Moreover, you will encounter various problems when your house is full to bursting with clutter.

Clutter can affect your physical and mental health as well. When you keep a lot of items in your home, they will accumulate dust, animal dander, and mold over time. These substances can cause or aggravate asthma and allergies.

Clutter can be tripping and fire hazards as well.

When your home looks more like a department store or antique shop, your mental well-being will be affected as well. You will start feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, and even suffocated whenever you see all the piled-up items you can’t throw away.

Donating, selling, and throwing away all or some of your possessions, though, are not your only options if you want to declutter your home.

If you can’t bear to part with certain items because of sentimental or financial reasons, store them temporarily or permanently in a rental unit from a reputable storage company in Dubai (or wherever you are located).

What to Put in Your Storage Unit

Making a long term solution means finding the best space for your clutter. The thought of pilling up stuff in the house is awful and stressful to some point.  However, to keep those adorable stuffs you don’t want to let go, think of a self storage units. This is a permanent solution to keep your home clean. You can rent a storage which is convenient and safe. Ensure all items are well-packaged and prepared for proper storage, selecting the right clutter to store away for storage.  The items shouldn’t take much of the storage space to avoid renting a bigger space.

Choosing which items to keep in self-storage, unfortunately, is also something that can be hard to do. Unless you rent two units or a large one, you will have to carefully select which of your possessions should be placed in storage.

If you are having a difficult time picking which items to store in your rental unit, you will do well to prioritize these first:

1. Furniture

Large furniture pieces such as a couch, bed, dining table, or cabinet that you rarely use can be some of the biggest space eaters in your home. If you are not using them because they look old or are damaged, putting them in a storage unit will free up space in your house.

If you are storing a lot of wooden furniture, make sure you rent an air-conditioned or climate-controlled unit. This is because wood tends to crack, rot, or warp when exposed to too much moisture over time.

When you can control the temperature inside the unit, you can reduce the humidity levels as needed. This will help maintain the condition of your wooden furniture.

2. Appliances

The extra oven, microwave, stove, freezer, and dryer you have in the kitchen and any other places where you are currently storing them. Whatever your plans are for these appliances in the future, keep them in a storage unit temporarily to declutter your home.

Before storing any appliance, make sure you wash or buff it properly using the right cleaning products and tools, inside and out. Drain any water from hoses, tanks, or tubes as well. Keep in mind that any moisture left inside or outside the machine can cause freezing, mildew damage, and rotten smell.

Make sure you wrap all small or fragile parts properly if you will remove them, and cover appliances with a white sheet or any other type of breathable cover.

3. Seasonal items

Families may have several boxes of Christmas, Halloween, and Easter decor they have collected over the years.

Whether you store such items in the attic, basement, garage, or bedroom closets, reclaim space that you can use for other more important items by storing these seasonal decorations in a self-storage unit.

Gardening tools and equipment are also seasonal items that you don’t tend to use all year round. If you’re tired of seeing your pruning shears, rakes, lawnmower, and other apparatuses in disarray in the garage, place them in a storage facility.

Lastly, you won’t use your winter coats and boots and beach essentials such as your surfboard and scuba diving gear all year round. To prevent these seasonal items from further cluttering your home, keep them in your rented unit during the offseason.

4. Mementos

If you have plenty of trophies, framed pictures, old vinyl records, and other items that remind you of your glorious, joyous past, pack them properly in boxes and haul them off to your storage unit.

By doing so, you will have a higher chance of preserving and protecting these items. Keep in mind that when they are in a storage facility, they will be under lock and key, and 24/7 surveillance. They will be safe from potential flooding and fire, which can happen in your home.

In case you want to hold onto your kids’ old clothes, blankets, toys, and other memorabilia, keeping them in your storage rental is an excellent option as well.

5. Antiques and other expensive collectors’ items

Aside from your mementos, you may have other, more valuable, costly possessions. You can ensure they are safe and secure from thieves, flood, fire, and other possible causes of damage by keeping them in a storage facility.

Examples of valuable items you can safely store in your unit are:

  • Antique vases and other heirlooms
  • Expensive or old art pieces
  • Your collection of coins, stamps, toys, and comic books

As long as you pack them properly and choose a good storage facility, you will ensure the security and excellent condition of your valuables.

To have a clutter-free, more spacious home again, find a reputable self-storage facility and prioritize storing the five items above first. This way, you will have more space, a cleaner home, and an overall sense of wellbeing.
