  1. Rate of flow through the pump

The total efficiency of a pump mainly depends on the speed of flow in the pump. A flow rate of 100-200 litres per minute is considered best for any household. The flow rate is an essential factor in deciding. 

  1. Inlet size

The most common size needed for household pumping is between 1 to 6 inches. Sometimes centrifugal pumps are used which takes in water from the inlet and outlet valve, but the inlet will be more prominent. The more intake, the faster the discharge. 

  1. Maximum head and pressure

The longest distance the pump will be able to pump water in terms of height is the maximum head. The type of pump you should be a maximum head than you intend the water to pump water. For instance, if you buy a pump with a maximum head of 60 metres, you cannot pump it higher than that. The net result will be zero in that case.

Centrifugal and positive displacement are the two types of household water pumping system used in ordinary houses. Both are used for continuous pumping of water. A rotating impeller is used to move water in a centrifugal water pump. This impeller also used to discharge the flow. There are standard, submersible and trash pumps available in centrifugal water pumps. Low viscosity liquids can also be pumped using a centrifugal pump. 

Positive displacement delivers only a fixed amount of water with the help of a flexible diaphragm in an expansion and contraction motion. This type of pumps can be used to carry high-viscosity fluids. Low flow and high pressure work best in this type of positive displacement. 

  1. Drawbacks

Centrifugal pumps have several drawbacks.  For preventing overheating of the system, the water has to be recirculated around the pump. The overheating is caused due to the low flow rate. These pumps have to be primed and should be filled with pumping fluid for perfect operating condition of the pump. Formation of air bubbles should be prevented at the impeller as this causes a condition called cavitation that can lead to severe damage to the system. Suspended solids in the liquid can cause wear on the impeller. 

In positive displacement a small clearance between the outer edge and rotating pump. This rotation must be a slow process. If it works on higher speeds, liquids erode and reduce the pump efficiency. 

  1. Efficiency level

Centrifugal pumps can be compatible with systems like pneumatic systems which does not need suction to lift. Domestic wells are installed with this system to boost pressure in the intake. Centrifugal pumps with vertical as well as horizontal configurations work as sump pumps and useful in fire protection systems for providing continuous pressure. 

Positive displacement pumps also called rotary pumps, can remove air from between the lines and prevents the requirement to bleed the air. High-viscosity fluids can easily flow through this type of pumps. Positive displacement pumps and centrifugal pumps are equally efficient in household systems.
