Safe Proof Your Home for Older Age

This post was last updated on November 22nd, 2019

One of the most frustrating parts of ageing is reduced mobility. As the population of the UK is ageing, independent mobility is becoming an increasingly common issue. Older people are often unable to walk up a flight of stairs. This is no longer a problem. Stair lifts provide easy movement to people with limited mobility. It is a simple device which allows you to ride up the stairs without causing any physical strain to your body. A typical stair lift has two major components; a track and a chair. The chair with motorised wheels is installed onto the track, which allows the movement of the chair up and down the stairs.

Stair lifts are very easy to operate. Different types of stair lifts have different features, but they all have a simple switch which controls the movement. Once the lift travels up the staircase, the chair will beep and stop. Most models of stair lifts come with a remote control, which allows the person to send the chair back up or down. All the stair lifts also have a seatbelt to ensure safety.

The stair lift moves on a track which is attached to the stair case. This is installed as a separate rail so that it does not damage your walls. The track is installed using screws which can go through any type of surface.

Types of Stair lifts

Various types of stair lifts are available in the market but buying new stair lifts is an important decision to make sure that you get the right one. Therefore, a few types of stair lifts are discussed here.

Seated Stair lifts

This is the most popular type of stair lift. It allows the user to comfortably sit on the seat which takes the person to the top. It is suitable for people who do not have any problem in changing from sitting to standing position.

Perch Stair lifts

This is ideal for people with limited mobility of the hip and knee joint. The seat provides support underneath the buttocks along with a seatbelt. This provides safety and ease for the users.

Straight Stair lifts

This is one of the most affordable options. The seat travels up the staircase. They are easy to install and maintain.

Curved Stair lifts

These stair lifts can go along the curves of the staircase. This is more suitable in homes where the staircase is not straight. This additional feature comes at an additional price, but it adds convenience.
