Bridal fashion, like the rest of the fashion industry, has trends that are constantly shifting and changing. Staying on top of them can be a hassle, and it is super important to look and feel like a million bucks on your big day. Actually spending a million bucks on your bridal fashion though, is not so great.
To help you stay on top of what’s new in the world of bridal fashion, our editors here at The Real Real put together a guide to five of the biggest trends.
1. Duchess Chic
Inspired by the luxe, heavily decorated aesthetic of royal weddings, brides have been trotting down the aisle and the runway in dresses that are reminiscent of the heavy brocade fabrics and puffy shoulders of fashion icons like Diana herself. Think Victorian inspired puffs of touille, heavy beaded bodices, high collars, and long sleeves with delicate wrist details. This style is great for brides who love a traditional (and fairly modest) look, but can spice things up by looking for dresses featuring open backs or adding dramatic makeup and accessories for an almost vampy aesthetic. This look really makes a romantic statement. Look to designers like Sandra Mansour and Oscar de la Renta for some serious dream wedding inspo.
2. Shimmery, Cloudy Silver
Sheer, sheer, sheer is the name of the game with this look. This year’s runways looks in bridal heavily feature shimmering light gray hues with lightweight sheer fabrics. We’re seeing a lot of a-line waists and cloudy gray materials like organza, chiffon, voile, and silk next to silver toned silks and even lamé. With an almost 1920’s era vibe of elegant simplicity, these chrome and silver detailed dresses will literally make you shine. Matching those soft smokey colors completes the look and a shiny heel or sleek bag like this Louis Vuitton number from The Real Real Louis Vuitton section would really look sexy and understated.
3. We’ve Got the Blues
Goodbye to traditional cream colors and stark white, and hello baby blues. Designers like Ralph & Russo and Vera Wang debuted some blue bridal gowns in their 2019 collections that we absolutely adore. A cool twist on the old “something blue” tradition for brides, these powdery blue numbers a stunning and fresh take on the tradition. This would also look great on brides who don’t feel confident in shades of white, like fair skinned gals. Don’t be shy if you’ve got a deeper tone though, because these pastel looks would also be gorgeous on richer skin tones. Pair it with fantasy inspired details like an old-school veil and flowery accessories for story book look that anyone can dig.
4. Feathers!
What says romance more than feathers? One of this season’s biggest hits is the incorporation of puffy, downy details attached to the bodice and sleeves of dresses. Designers are going all out with the glam excess of feathers, layered skirts, embellishments and ruffles. If you are not the type to go for the overstated, you can still incorporate this trend in small ways by throwing in luxe accessories. These feathery earrings are great if you’re going for just a touch of drama.
5. Capes
Not all superheros wear capes, but brides can thanks to this new trend. Capes have popped in an out of women’s fashion for literally hundreds of years and now they’re making their way into the bridal repertoires of designers like Elie Saab and Christian Dior. Capes are a great way to add a little warmth to your gown too, which is great for ladies planning autumn or early winter nuptials but summer weddings are still breezy with lacy sheer capes.
